Sharing the Philippine Experience
by Miko Alino, SG Pilipinas While people involved in the Rostock protests were in their respective camps and participating in confrontational blockades, a number of young people gathered today in their own "alternative summit" at the Rostocker Freizeitrum (the venue looked like a nursery school to me). We took part in a skill-share workshop organized by Solar Generation and People&Planet. I exchanged views on school-based campaigning with people from China, France, the United States, Britain, Germany, and Slovakia. I found the workshop interesting because I have little experience in campaigns that target schools and universities (I normally participate in organisations that deal with political bodies or business institutions). Together with Cheng of Solar Generation China, I presented a case study on what Solar Generation has been doing in the Philippines. The exchanges featured discussions on how-to's in campaigning. We also tackled broad issues, ranging from cultural sensiti...

ddpo yubnub command
New YubNub command: ddpo I'm a big fan of YubNub. Some Debian specific commands are really cool, like dpts or debbug. Still I was missing a command to go to the DDPO page of a given argument , so I just contributed my first command. Guess the name ....: ddpo. E.g.: the query ddpo zack leads to http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=zack I'll be happy when the first user will report that he guessed the ddpo command out of the blue!

Im skint!!!
Well, here we are again! You are sat there reading this shite, primarily because you have nothing better to do, and I have nothing better to do than write it! Jamie (the tit) is reading it because he has all the intelligence of a disembowled bison. I have just booked a holiday to Corfu with Emma Teale - yes, I know, how dare I increase carbon emissions by choosing not to travel there on the back of a pigeon, but there you go - and I cant wait. We go on the 17th Sept for a week, staying in the same apartments as Andrea, Stevie and Rob in Sidari. It's going to be a pretty cheap affair. We are going to have to live on whatever we find in the apartment's gardens, as what little money I do have is earmarked for cheap cigarettes and alcoholic beverages! But this brings me on to another subject - Heathrow's protestors. Now don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with people protesting, as such. But when you see these people protesting against pure logic, then I can't help myself. Do they really think that standing there like pillocks, with their dreadlocks and sunken eyes, is going to make a blind bit of difference to any of us? The vast majority of people in this country work bloody hard, the longest hours in Europe. So when they want to go on holiday, how can anyone begrudge them wanting to go abroad, as opposed to drowning in a holiday home in Gloucestershire. Fair enough, England has some fantastic places to visit, but you just can't count on the weather. Also, when the protestors are having a sneaky joint (which, lets face it, is inevitable), what are the chances that the weed has been brought into this country by carbon neutral means? And I'm sure they wouldn't have dreamed of getting to Heathrow in anything which uses fuel - no, they definitely floated there. And there clothes have been made using hand stitching, and hand made cotton. They use hand-made togs, rather than plastic buttons. Oh wait, no, I'm wrong. They are hypocrites. Fundamentalists who look for anything they can latch onto and protest for the sake of protesting. They are social misfits who just want to belong to something - anything - and they don't care if its worthwhile, or logical. Most of them don't have jobs, so when they get their dole money, do they only take the proportion of it that hasn't been created through carbon polluting commerce? I very much doubt it. I don't believe we are causing global warming - but I don't go around demoralising those who do. I do believe we should treat the planet with a bit more respect, and I'm all for reducing pollution - but mostly for the sake of air quality. But you cannot just stand there and shout at people. They would do better if they stood back and looked all the solutions, the economic viability of them, and slowly worked towards them. What you can see after 18 months of incessant warbling about global warming, is that people are well and truly fed up. We are recycling much more, driving cleaner cars, and washing at 30. We ARE doing our bit, so shut up and move to China, where a little protesting might actually achieve something.
